A German Prince in Conwy

Here is German Prince Hermann von Pückler-Muskau.

He arrived in England in 1826, supposedly in search of a second wife. That bit didn’t quite work out for him, but while he was on this side of the Channel, he did some sightseeing. And yes, he made it to Wales!

When he visited Conwy, he was clearly impressed and stated it was a place "whose site is most beautiful. Here stands the largest of those strong castles which Edward built… It is likewise the most remarkable for the picturesque beauty both of its position and structure…"

He even had something to say about the local food: "Conway is a laudable place in a gastronomic point of view: it abounds with a fish, the firm yet tender flesh of which is delicious…”

He travelled widely and regularly wrote letters to his ex-wife during his adventures. She saved them all, and when he returned home, she had them published as a book: 'Tour of a German Prince' - which had huge success!
