The Rising Gull

A Lost Inn of Conwy

The Rising Gull was a well-known Conwy inn during the first half of the nineteenth century.

The earliest known references are found in the account books of Jane Jones, draper, where both Robert Roberts (1826 and 1835) and Thomas Roberts (1838 and 1841) are recorded as customers of The Rising Gull.

The Roberts family remained closely associated with the inn for many years. Memorials in St Mary's Churchyard record:

Thomas Roberts, of the Rising Gull, died in 1858, aged 61.
His wife Ellen died in 1865, aged 70.
Robert Roberts, of the Rising Gull, died in 1860, aged 66.
Richard and Hannah Roberts' child died in 1869, aged 3.

A contemporary chronicle records that Robert Roberts alias Rising Gull was buried on 28 March 1860, showing how closely he was identified with the inn.

The last known reference comes in 1873, when Richard Roberts of the Rising Gull appears in the Conway Borough Council rent book.
